Rossini’s Stabat Mater

On April 19, Angela Brower sings the mezzo solo in Rossini’s Stabat Mater at the Tivoli Vredenburg, with Salome Jicia, Yosep Kang and Mika Kares as her co-stars. Marcus Creed conducts.

Rossini wrote the Stabat Mater after his “retirement” as an opera composer. That means that, just like in his well-known Petite messe solennelle, he could draw from a rich arsenal of musical and sometimes also theatrical effects to give a single biblical scene the allure of an opera. Rossini delves deep into the soul of Mary, who weeps for her crucified son Jesus.

The rest of the program features Mozart’s Adagio und Fuge and H. Andriessen’s Miroir de peine.
